For one year already does chess life happen mainly virtually, as the ongoing pandemic still does not really allow for club nights and over-the-board tournaments. But Man does not live by playing blitz on the internet alone. Therefore, our former member Jochen Wege, who nevertheless stayed connected with the club, has turned to the solving of chess problems and also piqued the interest of other members. Consequentially, the idea to hold an own solving tournament came up quickly.
On June 26th 2020, for the first time since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, an "analogous" club night was held in the Saalbau Nied again.
In the run-up to this, the board gave some thought about how a club night could be made interesting under the current restrictions related to the Corona pandemic. As tournament play as well as practise games are not possible without violating the required distance of one and a half meters, the board came up with alternatives.
In the wake of the coronavirus epidemic in Germany, the operations of our club as well as the leagues of the chess associations are subject to restrictions:
On March 6th, press attendant Oliver Uwira welcomed a journalist of Frankfurter Neue Presse for an interview about the topic "chess for everybody". The result was an interesting report about the essence of a chess club, in which, beside Oliver, youth attendant Hendrik Zimmermann and Kurt Gentner also had a voice. The article was published on March 9th by the Frankfurter Neue Presse, but unfortunately is not available online. We have digitalized the printed version, of course.
For the 7th round of the season against SK Gießen, the first team was able to field its best line-up, while the guest were a little bit weakened. So we were favored to maybe score a victory again, but to no avail. The match ended in a hard-fought draw.
In the 7th round Nied 2 welcomed the second team of SC Hattersheim. On paper, the hosts went into the match as the clear favourite, but Hattersheim put up a vigorous fight. As both teams left one board empty, the score was 1-1 after one hour.
